Humanity had been storing its nuclear waste in vast disposal sites on the far side of the Moon, but when an unknown form of "magnetic radiation" is detected, the accumulated waste reaches critical mass and causes a massive thermonuclear explosion on 13 September 1999. The force of the blast propels the Moon like an enormous booster rocket, hurling it out of Earth orbit and into deep space at colossal speed, stranding the 311 personnel stationed on Moonbase Alpha. - Wikipedia article

The story begins on 9 September 1999 when Commander Koenig leaves for Moonbase Alpha to take command.

The TV programme only ran for two series but there's a fascinating history behind its production and enduring legacy, for those willing to do some digging; there are plenty of interesting videos on YouTube as a starting point.

Our regular public stargazing at the John Harper Observatories in Dalby Forest are held during the autumn and winter months.
Come and see the stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies under one of the darkest skies in the country.
The site of the society observatories was awarded the Milky Way Class of the UK Dark Sky Discovery Award in January 2013.

LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE
BOOKING IS REQUIRED VIA EVENTBRITE: BOOK HERE

Please wrap up warm and bring along a torch (preferably with a red filter to preserve yours & others night vision).
Please avoid shining white light torches near the observatories, during the event or at other's faces, as it will take 20 minutes for eyes to readjust to the dark
Take extra care in the car park also.

IMPORTANT:

  • Should it be forecast for cloudy skies during the evening, we will be giving a talk in the courtyard outside the Visitor Centre as our usual indoor space is unavailable.
Please ensure you dress appropriately for the weather, as it can get cold after dark in the forest.
  • Unfortunately, if the weather is forecast for rain/snow/ice, as we have no indoor space available, this event will now be cancelled (ticket holders will be notified of any cancellations prior to the event).
Previously we would run a virtual tour of the night sky indoors if raining, but Forestry England now wish to charge £100+ for the use of a room for 90 minutes, every time we run a free event, which is clearly not sustainable for a charity running 1 event per month.

The Event itself is FREE however Forestry England still charge vehicles on exiting the forest – charge is reduced per vehicle for this event (code supplied at event).

Charitable donations welcomed.
Suggested donation of £2 per adult and £1 per child.
