Dr Janet Humphreys, formerly of the School of Earth and Environment at University of Leeds and current Open University  S283 (Planetary Science & the Search for Life) tutor, will be visiting the society on Friday April 19th as guest speaker to give a talk entitled “Cosmic Recycling”.

Have you ever wondered where the carbon in your body or the gold in your dental fillings came from? Starting from the Big Bang, Janet will aim to trace how these elements were made, and how they eventually found their way into our lives. To follow this journey, Janet will look at how stars are born and die, and the processes that sustain them on the main sequence and after they leave it. Also considered will be how the solar system formed and how the Earth became the familiar planet that it is today.

The meeting takes place at Ayton Village Hall, East Ayton, Scarborough with doors opening at 7pm with the talk starting at 7.30pm.  Non society members are welcome to attend for a £2 per person charge on the door.  For further information on this and our other upcoming guest speakers, please visit our events page.
