Ayton Meeting – Workshop / Observing Session

We will be discussing any technical questions or assisting with telescope setups anyone brings along if they’re unsure how to use them.
If the weather is clear, we will also be observing outside the hall.

Free entry for members of the society.
£3 on the door for non-members.

Public Stargazing in Dalby Forest – February 2022 @ Low Dalby Astronomy Centre

Our regular public stargazing at the Low Dalby Astronomy Centre in Dalby Forest held during the autumn and winter months. Come and see the stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies under one of the darkest skies in the country. The site of the society observatories was awarded the Milky Way Class of the UK Dark Sky Discovery Award in January 2013.

LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE
BOOKING IS REQUIRED VIA EVENTBRITE: BOOK HERE

Please wrap up warm and bring along a torch (preferably with a red filter to preserve yours & others night vision).
Please avoid shining white light torches near the observatories, during the event or at other’s faces, as it will take 20 minutes for eyes to readjust to the dark
Take extra care in the car park also.

If the weather happens to be inclement, please don’t be put off. A member of the society will give a talk / virtual tour in the warmth of the Forestry Commission Visitor Centre.

The Event itself is FREE however Forestry England now charge on exiting the forest – charge is reduced to £3 per vehicle for this event (code supplied at event).

Charitable donations welcomed.
Suggested donation of £2 per adult and £1 per child.

Ayton meeting  – Guest Speaker: Dr David Benoit, Senior Lecturer in Molecular Physics and Astrochemistry at Hull University will be presenting “Chemistry on a comet” – 18th March 2022

Dr David M Benoit

“David was appointed lecturer at the University of Hull in 2011 and promoted to senior lecturer in 2014.
He previously led a research group in computational chemistry at the University of Ulm, Germany, from 2005.
This followed lectureships in physical chemistry at Queen Mary, University of London (2002-2003) and in computational chemistry at University College London (2003-2004), returning to Queen Mary towards the end of 2004.
David held a post-doctoral fellowship at the MPI-FKF in Stuttgart, Germany, working with Michele Parrinello, in 2000 before moving to the ETHZ Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Manno, Switzerland, in 2001.”

S&RAS at Dalbyology 2022 @ Dalby Forest Visitors Centre

S&RAS members will be at the Dalbyology (formerly Dalby Explorer Day) on Sunday 10th July 2022, 10:30 – 16:00.

The theme this year is “communication” and we will be showcasing how communication has been used and improved through astronomical knowledge and technology.

Weather permitting we will have Solar scopes set up for safe solar viewing as well as opening the observatories to have a look at our night sky telescopes.

The event is free, however the Dalby entry fee still applies: Details HERE
