Ayton Gala 2013 – September 7th

John Harper FRAS talking to gala attendees

SARAS were invited to attend the annual Ayton Gala at Ayton Village Hall, East Ayton on Saturday September 7th.  The society has held our monthly meetings at the village hall for the past 8 years, so this was the ideal opportunity to promote the society and our meetings as well as our calendar of public stargazing events in Dalby Forest.

The forecast for the day was for sunny periods and this proved to be accurate with the Sun being visible in both white light and hydrogen alpha telescopes for attendees of the event in amongst periods of cloud.  A selection of material was available under the gazebo covering a number of areas of astronomy including books and observations / drawings by Honorary President John Harper FRAS.

A selection of other organisations and clubs were also present including the local boys football team, the Scarborough Archers and the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team, as well as a number of bric-a-brac and refreshment stands.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day at the event and we are looking forward to attending the event next year.  A gallery of the event has been uploaded to the website.
