SARAS visit the 1st Scarborough Scouts at their group camp in Dalby Forest

On the evening of Friday 10th May 2013 society members Andy Exton FRAS and Bob Christy FBIS visited the 1st Scarborough Scout group at their annual camp in Dalby Forest for an evening of astronomy.  Andy and Bob set up in Adderstone Field (the location of our annual Starfest event each August) with the group walking from their camp in Moorcock Meadow.

Despite partly cloudy skies, the cubs, scouts and leaders totalling around 80 in number were able to get a view of the planets Jupiter and Saturn in a Celestron 100ED f/9 refractor and also listen in on a number of satellites using radio equipment.  Many of the group had completed their astronomy badges over the past few months with the assistance of SARAS so this gave them an opportunity to get a look through a telescope and also hear the unfamiliar sounds of satellites.
