Filey Brigg Caravan Site
Filey brigg country park, Church Cliff Dr, Filey YO14 9ET
The Perseid Meteor Shower is active from 23 July to 23rd August. The peak time for meteor activity is predicted to be 3pm on 12 August until 3.30 am on 13 August.
Telescopes will be set up at the top of the car park, nearest to the sea and Filey Brigg.
This will give a good view to the south allowing us to see Saturn, the craters of the Moon, Alberio and other wonders of the night sky as we await the celestial firework display once it is dark enough.
The event is free and open to all.
You are advised to bring warm clothing and if possible something to sit or lie on as you relax and count how many meteors appear.
The event is weather dependent so please check on here before setting off.
A message will be posted on the Society Facebook page and here by 9pm on 12 August indicating whether the event is going ahead or not.
The event will end no later than 2.00 am.
For more information please contact the society president, John Harper, on 01723 500389.
Update – 11am Saturday 12th August. This event is currently ON. A final update will be published here by 7pm.
Update – 7pm Saturday 12th August. I am sorry to say that this event is officially OFF. The weather conditions and visibility do not make it viable and we do not want anyone travelling any distance only to be disappointed. Please do not let that stop you from going outside later and looking up. I will check the conditions again at 9pm and may well venture to Filey in the hope of seeing something. If that is the case anyone is welcome to join me. I will post again at about 9pm in case anyone who is local wishes to come and stand in a wet field and peer through the gaps in the clouds.
Update 9pm – There are hardly any gaps in the clouds above Scarborough now and the forecast for Filey is even worse than earlier. I will still pop down in case anyone turns up but the chances of seeing anything are not good. If anyone is still thinking of coming to Filey they can call me on 07812 660184 and I will give you a situation report from about 10.30pm onwards.
