S&RAS End of Season Spectacular 2018

S&RAS once again held their “End of Season Spectacular” as the final event of the calendar year at Ayton.
Instead of inviting an external guest speaker, members are invited to give mini presentations on topics of their choice.

Honorary President John Harper FRAS gave a talk recalling how S&RAS became associated with Dalby Forest, how John’s night classes in Astronomy started the ball rolling for the eventual founding of Kielder Observatory and the surprising sequence of events involved in the visit of Sir Patrick Moore to officially open the Low Dalby Observatory.

Ross Mitchell provided an interactive presentation on how to calculate the diameter of the sun using only a candle, cardboard, paper, tinfoil, scissors and a bit of maths.

The evening was rounded off with an Astro Quiz put together by Neil Graham with the winning team totalling 22 points out of a maximum of 30.
