Introduction to Astronomy evening

This event is for those who have or want to develop an interest in Astronomy but don’t know where to start or have a telescope and don’t know how to use it effectively
It will include a short introductory talk followed by a chance for non-members to approach members for help and advice on astronomy or in setting
up and using their telescopes.

Feel free to bring along equipment you may have if you don’t know how to use it.

Free for members.
£3 for non-members, payable on the door.

Guest Speaker: Roy Gunson “Pickering’s Harem”

Williamina Flemming – abandoned by her new husband just months after arriving in Boston, USA from Dundee. Pregnant and alone she rose to become one of the most famed female astronomers of the early 20th century . Her story plus those of a host of other female astronomers hired by Charles Edward Pickering between 1880 and 1919 to work at the Harvard College Observatory gives a remarkable insight on the determination by these women to succeed.

Speaker: Ross Mitchell “Light Lite”

Society member Ross Mitchell will be presenting “Light Lite”, a short physics overview of light – an introduction to what light is, how it behaves, different types of light and very briefly about its involvement with gravity, space/time
This will be followed by how light fits Astronomy – how stars form the different types of light, how and why objects reflect light, lights journey from a star to the earth, how we use light to measure things in space.

UPDATE:
Unfortunately due to illness SARAS President John Harper will not be able to present the “Around the Zodiac” talk at this meeting.

Instead we will hold an open meeting to discuss any recent astronomical objects we have been able to observe/image (such as comet 46P/Wirtanen) and also gives members and guest the opportunity to bring along and seek advice on any equipment you’ve been struggling with or get answers to any questions you have.
