Talk: Dr Janet Humphreys – Cosmic Recycling @ Ayton Village Hall
Oct 18 @ 19:30 – 21:30

Dr Janet Humphreys, formerly of Leeds University and current Open University tutor, will be giving a talk entitled “Cosmic Recycling” at Ayton Village Hall. Have you ever wondered where the carbon in your body or the gold in your dental fillings came from? Starting from the Big Bang, we will aim to trace how these elements were made, and how they eventually found their way into our lives. To follow this journey, we will look at how stars are born and die, and the processes that sustain them on the main sequence and after they leave it. We will need to consider how the solar system formed and how the Earth became the familiar planet that it is today.

Our first speaker of the new season is an established friend of SARAS who always treats us to an interesting and popular talk.
In his illustrated talk “Pluto Revealed” author and amateur astronomer Stuart Atkinson of Eddington Astronomical Society, Cumbria, will tell the story of the amazing NEW HORIZONS mission, which recently carried out the first ever fly-by and exploration of Pluto and its moons.
Using stunning images taken by the probe – many of which Stuart has processed himself, to bring out details and features not visible in the raw images released by NASA – the talk will describe New Horizons’ epic journey from Earth to Pluto, and describe the science it carried out on the way.
