Society secretary Andy Exton will be giving SARAS members and visitors a talk on the small bodied impacts on Earth and the threat that they cause. The talk follows research into the impacts at Tunguska and Chelyabinsk, the threat that the small bodies cause us on Earth and the detection and mitigation methods available that formed a project to complete his degree.

Stuart Atkinson of Eddington Astronomical Society in Cumbria will be visiting the society to give a talk entitled Martian Rovers. Expect to hear about Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity, the work they have performed on the surface of Mars and the discoveries they have made. Stuart is an expert on Mars and runs the blog “The Road to Endeavour” that is charting the work of Opportunity and is a regular attendee of our annual Starfest star camp where he has given talks for the past couple of years and will do again in 2015.

A presentation of the commissioning of the high resolution spectrograph (HRS) for the SALT telescope at the South African National Observatory. Apart from the science, this talk also shows some nice deep sky images taken with an Astrotrac on site.
