\nI am an astrophys icist at the E.A. Milne Centre for Astrophysics and a lecturer in the Cent re of Excellence for Data Science\, Artificial Intelligence and Modelling (DAIM). I work on radio astronomy of pulsars\, using some of the most sens itive telescopes in the world. My main areas of research are pulsar timing \, the interstellar medium\, and single pulse emission from pulsars.
\nI studied Physics at the University of Hull and was awarded a Ph.D. in Astronomy & Astrophysics by The University of Manchester. I have held rese arch positions at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and the Can adian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics.

\nProfessor Brad Gibson is the Head of the Department o f Physics & Mathematics\, and Director of the E.A. Milne Centre for Astrop hysics\, at the University of Hull. Brad completed his MSc and PhD at the University of British Columbia\, building the world’s first Liquid Mirror Telescope Observatory and designing software to map the distribution of th e chemical elements throughout the Universe. Brad was responsible for usin g exploding stars to determine the expansion rate of the Universe\, as par t of the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale\, for which his team was awarded the Gruber Prize in Cosmology. He w as the first to identify the locations within the Milky Way most likely to harbour complex biological life\, for which his work was named by Nationa l Geographic magazine as one of the Top 10 News Stories of the Year. Brad’ s work has been acknowledged by his peers 30\,000 times\, making him the U niversity of Hull’s most cited academic\, and ranking him within the top f ew percent in the world.
\nBrad has been responsible for doubling th e number of women entering physics at the University\, as part of his comm itment to widening participation and gender diversity in science\, and imp roving the career prospects of physics students\; this has all been accomp lished under his “Changing Face of Physics” campaign\, which led to the De partment’s Athena Swan award\, and the campaign being named Best Practice in the Country by the UK’s Equality Challenge Unit.
\nBrad is the Un iversity of Hull’s most active outreach and public/schools engagement acad emic. Since 2016\, he has run 500 events\, reaching more than 30\,000 peop le in-person (including 15\,000+ students across 60 different schools and colleges\, 60% of whom reside in the bottom two POLAR4 socio-economic quar tiles. His online/media appearance have reached a further two million peop le around the world. His outreach efforts led to him being named the Insti tute of Physics’ John Porter Memorial Lecturer\, the Leon Davies Lecturer (Glasgow)\, the Ray Bootland Memorial Lecturer\, and Manchester’s Bexwyke Lecturer\; he has spoken at the Cheltenham Science Festival\, the British Science Festival\, the Royal Institution of Great Britain\, and opened for Brian Cox and Lucy Hawking at European AstroFest\, and delivered a highly popular TED talk on the subject of the search for alien life.
\nIn 2023 Brad was named Honorary President of the Association for Science Educ ation and in October 2023\, Brad ran his 1000th school outreach event.
