About Gerry:
\nI retired in December 2019 from
my employer of 27 years a Swiss machine manufacturer.
\nI was employ
ed in the industrial laser division as the Installation Project Manager fo
r UK and Ireland.
\nMy background was in Electronic and Electrical sy
stems.
\nI’ve always interested in science and related subjects but a
bout 10 years ago decided to take astronomy more seriously and joined YAS.
\nand a bit about the talk
\nWith regard to The future of Space
tourism\, I looked into it and became really quite interested and as such
did some digging which enabled me to put together the presentation.
\nBasically\, I looked at what’s possible now\, midterm and we’ll into the
future\, it’s based on some know facts and some speculation about the fut
ure\, along with a few considerations that would need to be overcome to ma
ke things possible.
\nA little tongue in cheek towards the end\, but
does have some big interesting numbers I think\, no heavy maths or anythin
g like that.
\nSuitable for all ages with some nice pictures and a co
uple of small videos.
Zoom can be used on Windows\, Mac\, Android
and iOS.

Brad complet ed his MSc and PhD at the University of British Columbia\, building the wo rld’s first Liquid Mirror Telescope Observatory and designing software to map the distribution of the chemical elements throughout the Universe. Bra d was responsible for using exploding stars to determine the expansion rat e of the Universe\, as part of the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on t he Extragalactic Distance Scale\, for which his team was awarded the Grube r Prize in Cosmology. He was the first to identify the locations within th e Milky Way most likely to harbour complex biological life\, for which his work was named by National Geographic magazine as one of the Top 10 News Stories of the Year. Brad’s work has been acknowledged by his peers 30\,00 0 times\, making him the University of Hull’s most cited academic\, and ra nking him within the top few percent in the world.
\nBrad has been r esponsible for doubling the number of women entering physics at the Univer sity\, as part of his commitment to widening participation and gender dive rsity in science\, and improving the career prospects of physics students\ ; this has all been accomplished under his “Changing Face of Physics” camp aign\, which led to the Department’s Athena Swan award\, and the campaign being named Best Practice in the Country by the UK’s Equality Challenge Un it.
\nBrad is the University of Hull’s most active outreach and publ ic/schools engagement academic. Since 2016\, he has run 500 events\, reach ing more than 30\,000 people in-person (including 15\,000+ students across 60 different schools and colleges\, 60% of whom reside in the bottom two POLAR4 socio-economic quartiles.
