ave or want to develop an interest in Astronomy but don’t know where to st
art or have a telescope and don’t know how to use it effectively.

t will include a short introductory talk followed by a chance for non-memb
ers to approach members for help and advice on astronomy or in setting
\nup and using their telescopes.
Feel free to bring along equipm ent you may have if you don’t know how to use it.

Our regular public stargazing at the Low Dalby As tronomy Centre in Dalby Forest held during the autumn and winter months. C ome and see the stars\, planets\, nebulae and galaxies under one of the da rkest skies in the country. The site of the society observatories was awar ded the Milky Way Class of the UK Dark Sky Discovery Award in January 2013 .

\nProfessor Brad Gibson is the Head of the Department of Physics & Mathematics\, and Director of the E.A . Milne Centre for Astrophysics\, at the University of Hull. Brad complete d his MSc and PhD at the University of British Columbia\, building the wor ld’s first Liquid Mirror Telescope Observatory and designing software to m ap the distribution of the chemical elements throughout the Universe. Brad was responsible for using exploding stars to determine the expansion rate of the Universe\, as part of the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on th e Extragalactic Distance Scale\, for which his team was awarded the Gruber Prize in Cosmology. He was the first to identify the locations within the Milky Way most likely to harbour complex biological life\, for which his work was named by National Geographic magazine as one of the Top 10 News S tories of the Year. Brad’s work has been acknowledged by his peers 30\,000 times\, making him the University of Hull’s most cited academic\, and ran king him within the top few percent in the world.
\nBrad has been re sponsible for doubling the number of women entering physics at the Univers ity\, as part of his commitment to widening participation and gender diver sity in science\, and improving the career prospects of physics students\; this has all been accomplished under his “Changing Face of Physics” campa ign\, which led to the Department’s Athena Swan award\, and the campaign b eing named Best Practice in the Country by the UK’s Equality Challenge Uni t.
\nBrad is the University of Hull’s most active outreach and publi c/schools engagement academic. Since 2016\, he has run 500 events\, reachi ng more than 30\,000 people in-person (including 15\,000+ students across 60 different schools and colleges\, 60% of whom reside in the bottom two P OLAR4 socio-economic quartiles. His online/media appearance have reached a further two million people around the world. His outreach efforts led to him being named the Institute of Physics’ John Porter Memorial Lecturer\, the Leon Davies Lecturer (Glasgow)\, the Ray Bootland Memorial Lecturer\, and Manchester’s Bexwyke Lecturer\; he has spoken at the Cheltenham Scienc e Festival\, the British Science Festival\, the Royal Institution of Great Britain\, and opened for Brian Cox and Lucy Hawking at European AstroFest \, and delivered a highly popular TED talk on the subject of the search fo r alien life.

\nDr Jurg en Schmoll was born in Germany in 1970\, he developed an interest i n astronomy around the age of 12\, influencing the career path. Studied ph ysics in Bonn\, Germany before doing his PhD in astrophysics at Potsdam\, Germany. Since the year 2000 has been working at the Centre for Advanced I nstrumentation (CfAI) of Durham University.
\nCurrent work focuses mostly on design\, integration and tes t of optical components used in astronomical research. Projects include th e high resolution spectrograph SALT-HRS\, the dark energy survey instrumen t DESI\, the balloon borne telescope SuperBIT and the Cherenkov Telescope Array CTA.
\nStrong private int erest in astronomy as well\, having built various telescopes and observato ries for private use mostly in the field of deep sky imaging.

\nI am an astrophysicist at the E.A. Milne Centre for Astrophysics and a lecturer in the Centre of Excellence for Data Science\, Artificial Intelligence and Modelling (DAIM). I work on radio astronomy of pulsars\, using some of the most sensitive telescopes in the world. My main areas of research are pulsar timing\, the interstellar medium\, and single pulse e mission from pulsars.

\nProfessor Brad Gibson is th e Head of the Department of Physics & Mathematics\, and Director of the E. A. Milne Centre for Astrophysics\, at the University of Hull. Brad complet ed his MSc and PhD at the University of British Columbia\, building the wo rld’s first Liquid Mirror Telescope Observatory and designing software to map the distribution of the chemical elements throughout the Universe. Bra d was responsible for using exploding stars to determine the expansion rat e of the Universe\, as part of the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on t he Extragalactic Distance Scale\, for which his team was awarded the Grube r Prize in Cosmology. He was the first to identify the locations within th e Milky Way most likely to harbour complex biological life\, for which his work was named by National Geographic magazine as one of the Top 10 News Stories of the Year. Brad’s work has been acknowledged by his peers 30\,00 0 times\, making him the University of Hull’s most cited academic\, and ra nking him within the top few percent in the world.
\nBrad has been r esponsible for doubling the number of women entering physics at the Univer sity\, as part of his commitment to widening participation and gender dive rsity in science\, and improving the career prospects of physics students\ ; this has all been accomplished under his “Changing Face of Physics” camp aign\, which led to the Department’s Athena Swan award\, and the campaign being named Best Practice in the Country by the UK’s Equality Challenge Un it.
\nBrad is the University of Hull’s most active outreach and publ ic/schools engagement academic. Since 2016\, he has run 500 events\, reach ing more than 30\,000 people in-person (including 15\,000+ students across 60 different schools and colleges\, 60% of whom reside in the bottom two POLAR4 socio-economic quartiles. His online/media appearance have reached a further two million people around the world. His outreach efforts led to him being named the Institute of Physics’ John Porter Memorial Lecturer\, the Leon Davies Lecturer (Glasgow)\, the Ray Bootland Memorial Lecturer\, and Manchester’s Bexwyke Lecturer\; he has spoken at the Cheltenham Scien ce Festival\, the British Science Festival\, the Royal Institution of Grea t Britain\, and opened for Brian Cox and Lucy Hawking at European AstroFes t\, and delivered a highly popular TED talk on the subject of the search f or alien life.

\nI am a n astrophysicist at the E.A. Milne Centre for Astrophysics and a lecturer in the Centre of Excellence for Data Science\, Artificial Intelligence and Modelling (DAIM). I work on radio astronomy of pulsars\, using some of th e most sensitive telescopes in the world. My main areas of research are pu lsar timing\, the interstellar medium\, and single pulse emission from pul sars.
